Five people die in two separate Monday morning crashes in DeKalb County

DeKalb County, GA — DeKalb County Police are investigating two fatal crashes that occurred Monday morning, Feb. 8.

The crashes claimed the lives of five people.

– Police responded to a crash at 4 a.m. on I-285 near Lawrenceville Highway and LaVista Road.

“The victim, a male, was changing his flat tire near the median wall when he was struck by a vehicle,” a spokesperson for the Police Department said. “He was transferred to a local hospital, where he died.”

– At 1 a.m., DeKalb County Police responded to a multi-vehicle crash that that resulted in four deaths. It occurred at I-285 east and Moreland Avenue.

“The victims were all male adults and there were at least four vehicles involved. The highway was shut down for at least five hours and has since reopened,” the spokesperson said.

In a subsequent update, the spokesperson said, “The investigation continues into the fatal accident, which claimed the lives of four people near Moreland/285 today, but I can confirm that a total of five people were struck while outside their vehicles at the time of the accident. The ages of the fatal victims are from late 40s to late teens. The fifth person (age unknown) remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The person responsible for the accident has been identified (an adult male) and he is also in a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The cause of the accident is under investigation, and updates will be emailed as they become available.”

There were no additional details regarding these incidents.
