Decatur, GA – The opportunity to turn yourself in on a misdemeanor charge in DeKalb County and get an immediate bond is still a reality, a press release announced. The DeKalb County Jail’s “Warrant Relief” program will continue to be held each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday through the end of May.

“It’s understandable that people are apprehensive about turning themselves in to law enforcement authorities under any circumstances,” says Sheriff Maddox. “Those who did, however, realize the advantage of being able to get on with their lives while they wait for their day in court.”

The warrant relief program allows individuals who have outstanding arrest warrants for certain misdemeanor offenses a chance to surrender but avoid being jailed. When they turn themselves in voluntarily, they can receive an unsecured judicial release – a free bond. The program runs from 8 a.m. until 11p.m. each day – Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday – at the DeKalb County Jail – 4425 Memorial Drive, Decatur, Georgia 30032.

Warrant services for some offenses have been delayed due to the closing of courtrooms during the pandemic. When DeKalb County courts are fully re-opened, individuals wanted on misdemeanor warrant charges, including those out on bond, will be expected to answer to the charges in court.

On the last day of the first Warrant Relief event this past week, Sheriff Melody Maddox spoke to a young man who came to the jail with his mother to turn himself in. The sheriff said, “I believe the process of being booked into jail – even though he was bonded out – will have an impact on his future behavior.”
