Stone Mountain, GA — A couple with deep ties to Stone Mountain plan to open a new restaurant and lounge featuring live jazz in the former home of the Old Stone Mountain Post Office.

Lorenzo and Shemeka Maddox will debut The Mailroom Lounge on East Mountain Street this fall.

“It’s a place for good vibes, good food and good fun,” Shemeka told The Tucker Observer.

The Maddoxes were raised in Stone Mountain and were high school sweethearts at Stone Mountain High School. They jumped at the opportunity to be part of the revival of Stone Mountain Village.

“They lost the entertainment there and a lot of things, so we’re trying to bring back the good vibes to Stone Mountain,” Shemeka said.

They fell in love with the venue at first sight and decided to keep the post office theme in the name, in the décor and on the lite bites on the menu.

Our goal is to ensure that when you’re eating our food, you’re traveling around the world,” Shemeka said. “You’re at the post office, so you need to travel like on a postcard. We’ll feature different food and drinks from around the world.”

While they’ll honor the building’s past, they’ve also kept in mind the tastes and needs of patrons of the present. They made sure to have backgrounds throughout the space tailor-made for perfect Instagram shots.

The Mailroom Lounge will also have a rotating roster of live jazz groups.

“We’ll have good music every weekend,” Shemeka said.

Her background is in childcare, but she said she’s known in her family for orchestrating weddings and other family events. The Mailroom Lounge is an extension of that work.

“I’m always the person who puts everything together,” Shemeka said. “I’ve always wanted an events center. My grandmother had a restaurant and I loved cooking, so I was always in the kitchen.”

The COVID-19 pandemic didn’t delay the opening of the new business as it did for most others. It actually gave the Maddoxes the time to put it all together and bring it to fruition.

“The opportunity just presented itself during COVID and I ran with it,” Shemeka said. “It was a gift from God.”

“Everyone’s looking for a happy place and I’m excited to provide a happy place,” she added.

The Mailroom Lounge is one of several new businesses opening or planning to open in Stone Mountain recently. Health-conscious chicken wing restaurant Drumz N’ Flatz opened on Stone Mountain Freeway in April. Bookstore and wine bar The Vibrary and Cherokee Rose BBQ Bar & Kitchen will both open on Main Street this month.
