Clarkston, GA — The Clarkston City Council will meet on Tuesday, June 1, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The council will vote on several agenda items including DeKalb County’s advertised millage rate, the city’s animal ordinance and American Rescue Plan funding.

Anyone wishing to speak at the meeting must request to speak prior to the meeting’s start time must contact City Manager Robin Gomez and must identify the meeting and/or agenda item(s) they will speak on/about.

The city found that its animal ordinance simply referenced that the city adopted the DeKalb County animal ordinance, however, City Manager Robin Gomez said it’s likely better policy and his recommendation that Clarkston adopts an animal ordinance that is specific to the city.

The proposed ordinance uses language from other ordinances and “codifies what the responsibilities are” for anyone who has a pet. In addition to regulating how the city deals with vicious animals, the proposal recommends the city participate in a program to trap and neuter or spay feral cat colonies, Tucker Observer previously reported.

Earlier this year, Congress passed the American Rescue Plan, Biden’s COVID-19 relief bill, which provides direct funding to cities. Clarkston is set to receive about $4 million from the federal government. The council plans to continue discussions about how the city will spend this money.

Under federal guidelines, the money may be used to help everyone affected by the COVID-19 emergency and its public health impacts, which includes providing money to households, small businesses and nonprofits; workers performing essential work during the COVID-19 public health emergency; governments that have lost revenue due to COVID-19; and investing in water, sewer and broadband infrastructure.

The City Council will also consider approving proclamations for Juneteenth Day, World Refugee Day and LGBTQ Month.
