Stone Mountain, GA — One of Georgia’s largest Independence Day celebrations will take place at Stone Mountain Park.

For residents of the nearby city of Stone Mountain, that will mean having to work around the event. The park is a separate entity from the city of Stone Mountain.

City officials updated residents on the city’s plans for dealing with the celebration.

“Although the City is not hosting a July 4th event, the Village will be inundated with those wishing to celebrate the holiday at Stone Mountain Park,” the city announced. “Long-time residents are familiar with the annual flood of cars, but we wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the tentative plans.”

Here’s more information from the city of Stone Mountain:

Though the celebration will go on all weekend, we suspect the busiest day will be Sunday, July 4th. The Park has a new process for dividing the laser lawn for the show and the Park gates will likely close early to mid-afternoon. Once the gate closes, our police department will block both James B. Rivers Drive and East Mountain Street as they intersect Fourth Street. Only residents of that area, emergency vehicles, and Park staff will be permitted to go past the barricades. Park Circle and Park Boulevard will also be blocked at James B. Rivers Drive. If Friday or Saturday evenings also become busy, the police department may implement the plan on those evenings as well.

Our goal is to mitigate any inconvenience to our citizens when possible by keeping traffic moving through and out of the city. Pedestrians will still be allowed to enter the Park, but parking ordinances will be enforced. Parking on grass and sidewalks, obstructing roadways, or otherwise causing a hazard are prohibited and violators will be cited or towed.
