DeKalb County, GA — DeKalb County reports that due to an overwhelming response to their Aug. 14 vaccination event at the Gallery at South DeKalb Mall, officials had to shut down the event early.

The event drew a crowd for two reasons: $100 gift cards and star power.

“NBA legends Dikembe Mutombo and Dominique Wilkins appeared at the event to encourage people to get COVID-19 vaccinations,” a press release from the county says.

The county says it gave out more than 1,000 COVID-19 vaccinations and gave COVID-19 tests to 150 adults and children. The tests were administered by Medcura Health.

“DeKalb County has developed a blueprint for success in the fight against COVID-19,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said in a press release. “We had the right message, respected messengers, a convenient location and an attractive incentive.”

The county says it has vaccinated more than 1,500 people during four county-sponsored vaccination events.
