Tucker, GA — Great Day of Service, a yearly event sponsored by Tucker First United Methodist Church, is scheduled for Sept. 25. Volunteers are needed to complete projects for senior residents, crochet mats for the homeless, paint fire hydrants for DeKalb County Fire Department, clean up Henderson Park and playground – and more.

This year, the event plans to create 50 flood buckets with emergency supplies for areas hit by hurricanes and flooding. Heavy-duty buckets contain dust masks, work gloves, clothespins and a clothesline, trash bags and household cleaners.

Great Day of Service will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 pm. The day will kick off with a team breakfast, then teams will tackle projects to meet the needs of friends and neighbors. Teams of six to 25 people will sign up for projects at www.tuckerfirst.org. Projects are available for ages 9 and up, activity levels and experience. Babysitting is also available.

Part of the day will include an electronics recycling drive at Wesley Center Loading Dock, 2397 Fourth St., Tucker, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Accepted items: computers, laptops, tablets, fax machines, keyboards, copiers, mainframes, disk drives, LED lights and bulbs, cables, telephones, cell phones, VCRs, radios, cassette players, CD and DVD players, satellite dishes and telecommunication systems, as well as iron, steel and aluminum.

Free garden soil is available in the church parking lot on a first come, first served basis.

Covid protocols will be in place for Great Day of Service. Masks are required at all times, indoor and outside, and participants will be asked to distance six feet apart. Hand sanitizer will be widely available.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tucker First canceled the annual volunteer event in 2020. Instead, they hosted Do Something September, a month-long effort to address community projects. Participants wrote letters to homebound residents and first responders, donated blood, helped deliver items for Just Bakery of Atlanta and made health kits for homeless residents.

Organizations that benefit from the Great Day of Service are Wellroot Family Services, Tucker Parks and Recreation, local nursing homes and DeKalb County Fire and Rescue.
