What’s happening this week: Tucker Cruise In, food distribution, farmers markets

DeKalb County, GA — Several events are happening this week in and around DeKalb County, including the Tucker Cruise In, a food distribution event at McLendon Elementary School, and local farmers markets. Several local government meetings are also scheduled for this week. Here’s what’s happening this week:

Each/Other: Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger exhibit

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University presents Each/Other: Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger, the first exhibition to feature together the work of two leading Indigenous contemporary artists whose processes focus on collaborative art making. The exhibit explores the collective process of creation and features over 20 mixed-media sculptures, wall hangings, and large-scale installation works by Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger, along with a new monumental artist-guided community artwork also entitled Each/Other. The exhibition will be on display at the Carlos Museum until Dec. 12.

Hands On Atlanta Food Distribution 

Hands On Atlanta will distribute 440 meal kits on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at noon at the International Community School on Wood Trail Lane in greater Decatur. The organization will also hand out 260 meal kits at McLendon Elementary School on Hollywood Drive in greater Decatur on Wednesday. Hands On Atlanta’s Meals 4 Kids program partners with local individuals and companies interested in providing wraparound resources to metro Atlanta students and families. This meal pack is sponsored by ShopCore, an affiliate of the Blackstone Group.

Decatur Farmers Market 

The Decatur Farmers Market is open on Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 4-7 p.m. at First Baptist Church Decatur, 308 Clairemont Avenue. The market has vendors with products such as produce, eggs, meat, dairy, grains, hot food, beauty products, gifts and more. Masks are required to enter the farmers market.

Fleet Feet Wednesday Run 

Join Fleet Feet Decatur’s Wednesday Run club every week for routes varying from two to four miles. The club is meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in front of Fleet Feet Decatur, 431 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. The courses start and end at the store. After the run, the club regroups and walks over to a local business for socializing and special discounts. On the third Wednesdays, the club heads over to East Decatur to support Three Taverns Brewery, 121 New St. The group meets up outside the brewery, and the courses start and end at there.

Art for the People Workshop: Decolonize Through Culture 

The Art for the People Cultural Curriculum is a workshop for creating a community-centered, art-based educational experience. It proposes to explore how art can be a tool for advocacy and to provide political critique of structural racism, how art and creative expression can be used as an anti-racism tool and how this work can be done in the context of deepening community engagement and discourse. The four-week course will feature virtual 90-minute sessions during weeknight evenings and weekend activities. This week, the course will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

“Sweet Land” Screening at Emory University 

The Michael C. Carlos Museum is hosting a screening of “Sweet Land” on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. on the Emory University Quadrangle. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the outdoor screening. In case of rain, the film will be shown in Ackerman Hall on Level Three of the Carlos Museum. Sweet Land is the result of a highly collaborative and multi-perspectival approach. The opera features costumes by Cannupa Hanska Luger. Luger co-directed Sweet Land with Yuval Sharon, and his art interweaves performance and political action to communicate stories about 21st-century Indigeneity. His works are featured in the exhibition, Each/Other: Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger on view at the Michael C. Carlos Museum.

Tucker Farmers Market 

The Tucker Farmers Market will be open on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 4-7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market features over 35 vendors which include a diverse group of local farmers, bakers, growers and producers from Tucker, metro Atlanta and Georgia.

Placita Latina Emerging Latinx Artist Showcase 

Placita Latina is partnering with the Decatur Arts Alliance to launch an emerging Latinx artist showcase, “What Makes Us Who We Are: Celebrating Latinx Artists.” The showcase highlights the work of six artists from different backgrounds and experiences, each exploring the question of what makes them who they are. The showcase is on display at the Decatur Visitor’s Center, 113 Clairemont Ave. Placita Latina will celebrate the showcase with an artists’ reception on Friday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. The reception will be held mostly outside with opportunities to go inside the gallery to view the artwork.

Tunes by the Tracks in Stone Mountain 

Tunes by the Tracks is back this month in Stone Mountain. The free concert series is held each Friday night in September and October from 7-9 p.m. in Stone Mountain Village at 922 Main Street. Concerts will be held in the municipal parking lot and will feature a number of well-known artists. Tunes by the Tracks will be held on Friday, Oct. 8.

Fernbank After Dark: Potions and Poisons

On the second Friday of each month, Fernbank After Dark offers a variety of unique and socially distanced after-hours experiences for grown-ups, including outdoor explorations in WildWoods, museum exhibits, live music, full bars, tapas menus and science demonstrations. Each month highlights a different science theme and features a variety of immersive programming. On Friday, Oct. 8, from 7-11 p.m. join the museum for an evening filled with potions, poisons and murderous practioners.

Fleet Feet Saturday Run

Join Fleet Feet Decatur on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. for an open group run. The group meets on Saturday, Oct. 9, in front of Fleet Feet Decatur, 431 W. Ponce de Leon Ave., and the run starts and end there. Upon arrival, check in at the table in front of the store and grab a map. Various routes are offered. Bathrooms are available. Water is not available on the course.

Oakhurst Farmers Market 

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sceptre Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious baked treats, and more amongst the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

Opening of “Antarctic Dinosaurs” at Fernbank Museum 

Fernbank Museum’s new exhibition “Antarctic Dinosaurs” opens on Saturday, Oct. 9, with a special opening day event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guests can explore more fossils, take in a dino talk, meet the paleontologist and paleobotanist featured in both the exhibit and film, and more. Fernbank is also showing an advanced premiere of the companion film ‘Dinosaurs of Antarctica’, opening on Saturday. Get a view at how the dinosaurs featured in the exhibit ‘Antarctic Dinosaurs’ moved, interacted, hunted and survived in this giant screen film. Film tickets can be added for $6.95 each.

Tucker Cruise In

Tucker Cruise In is a non-profit, old-fashioned town meet and greet car show located on Main Street in Tucker. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature a wide variety of cars, ranging from antiques to street rods, motorcycles to imports. There is a nominal $5.00 registration fee to enter a car into judging.

Oakhurst Porchfest 

Oakhurst Porchfest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 9, from noon to 7 p.m. The festival will feature various musical performances at residents’ homes, where their porches become stages and yards become venues. The festival is open to all to celebrate music and community throughout one square mile of the Oakhurst neighborhood. Tickets are not required to attend Porchfest. The festival is made up of one-hour performances per porch, as Porchfest is also a community-building effort and a celebration of music, so getting people out is key. Porchfest will feature about 200 individual acts spread across an equal number of porches. The lineup includes The Druid Hills Billys, Yard Zeppelin, Atlanta Symphony Musicians and Friends, and Decatur Community Players.

Avondale Estates Farmers Market 

Join neighbors, visitors and vendors on Sunday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Avondale Estates Farmers Market, located in the parking lot of My Parents’ Basement, 22 N Avondale Road. Browse a colorful array of locally sourced food and goods. Items offered include baked goods, cheeses, eggs, homemade jellies, meats and produce.

Winnona Park Community Yard Sale 

The Winnona Park Community Yard Sale will be held on Sunday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents are encouraged to clean out their houses, garages and even their cars in preparation for the yard sale. The event is traditionally held the week before super trash day, which will be on Oct. 16. Anyone can attend the event and those wishing to sell items must be zoned for Winnona Park Elementary and must register on the Winnona Park Neighborhood Association website.

Friends of Decatur Cemetery Second Sunday Stroll 

On the second Sunday of every month, Friends of Decatur Cemetery hosts tours that start at 2:30 p.m. at the well house and gazebo in the historic Old Section. A tour will be held on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the Decatur Cemetery, 229 Bell Street. Friends of Decatur Cemetery was founded in 1993 and is a dedicated volunteer group that works closely with the city of Decatur to preserve, maintain and improve the cemetery and educate the community about its importance as a historic and cultural resources. Decatur Cemetery is the resting place of many citizens who helped create the communities known today as Decatur, DeKalb County and the state of Georgia.

Upcoming Local Government Meetings

The Decatur City Commission meets on Monday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. for a regular meeting at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street.

The Stone Mountain City Council will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m. for a regular meeting via Zoom.

The Clarkston City Council will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. at Clarkston City Hall, 1055 Rowland Street, and via Zoom.

The Avondale Estates City Commission meets on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 5:30 p.m. for a special called meeting at Avondale Estates City Hall, 21 N. Avondale Plaza.

The Decatur Downtown Development Authority will meet on Friday, Oct. 8, at 8 a.m. at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street.

The Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board meets on Friday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m. at Ebster Recreation Center, 105 Electric Ave.

The Kirkwood Neighbors’ Organization will meet on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.
