Clarkston, GA — The Atlanta Regional Commission has announced its 2021 Regional Excellence award winners, recognizing planning and development projects around Atlanta, according to a press release.

The Cottages on Vaughn development in Clarkston was one of the winners. The first micro-cottage community in Georgia, Cottages on Vaughan, includes eight homes and a green space. Each home is under 500 square feet and sold in the mid-low $100,000 range.

The climate-conscious community features solar panels and edible, regenerative landscaping, according to a press release from developer MicroLife Institute, an Atlanta nonprofit.

It won the award for Innovative Development.

“The Cottages on Vaughan in the City of Clarkston, a first-of-its-kind project in Georgia, is a so-called ‘micro-pocket’ neighborhood built on a half-acre lot one block from downtown Clarkston in a joint effort between MicroLife Institute and the City of Clarkston,” ARC reports. “The Cottages on Vaughn consist of eight ‘micro-cottage’ homes, each of which are less than 500 square feet, featuring spacious front porches that make it easy to connect with neighbors. The neighborhood, which is also built with climate-conscious features such as solar panels and edible, regenerative landscaping, provides homeownership opportunities in a city where a lack of available land prevents much new housing from being built — and the vast majority of existing housing are rental properties.”
