Stone Mountain, GA — A popular winter attraction at Stone Mountain Park has been canceled this year.

Stone Mountain’s “Snow Mountain” event offers families the chance to enjoy snow in a part of the country that seldom sees it, an event that features tubing and other fun activities.

But the park couldn’t pull it off this year for a variety of reasons, CEO Bill Stephens said.

“In recent years, Snow Mountain has become one of the most popular seasonal attractions at Stone Mountain Park,” he said.

It’s also a logistical challenge. The event requires pumping and transfer of millions of gallons of water from Stone Mountain Lake to make the snow, building a large scaffolding on the lawn of Memorial Hall and many staffers to make it happen, including workers who monitor the safety of the event and manage the rides.

“Decisions on holding this attraction during the winter months have to be made during summer,” Stephens said. “At that time, the COVID19 pandemic in Georgia was also much more making its presence known.  Herschend Family Entertainment as a result of the ongoing pandemic and related unknowns recommended to the [Stone Mountain Memorial Association] not to stage and offer Snow Mountain during the 2021 holiday season this year.”

There will still be other attractions at the park this holiday season.

“Our new Holiday Lights show on the side of the mountain is the largest holiday lights exhibit in the state, and based on pre-sales and attendance thus far, other than bookings for our hotels, visitation is returning to pre-pandemic levels for special events,” Stephens said.
