Clarkston confirms new city clerk

Clarkston, GA — At their regular meeting on February 1, the Clarkston City Council approved Tomika Lewis as the new City Clerk. Lewis has been carrying out the duties of the position since November.

The city council also appointed Herbert Clark as the new Planning and Zoning Board member, and re-appointed Dean Moore to the Clarkston Historic Preservation Commission. The council appointed members to the Early Learning Task Force, Youth Advisory Council, Senior Resident Advisory Committee, Police Community Task Force, Preventive Health Task Force, Public Art Advisory Committee, and Charter Review Committee.

In addition, council members were appointed to various standing committees, including Public Safety and Legal Committee, Transportation and Environment Committee, Housing and Infrastructure Committee, Community Development Committee, Equality Inclusion  and Opportunity Committee, and the Marketing and Civic Innovation Committee. Members of the public may apply to be members of those committees as well.

The city approved alcohol licenses for Olympic Cafe dba Abyssinia Cafe and Restaurant (926 Montreal Rd.), for Samaira Investment Incorporated dba Chevron Food Mart (3635 Church Street), and for Thulungbros LLC dba Chevron Food Mart (1109 Montreal Rd.),

The council also approved a change order for SPLOST 4 projects for a pedestrian enhancement  trailhead and a mailbox replacement on Rowland Street.

Additionally, engineering services from POND & Company for the SPLOST 6 Mell Avenue Crossing project were selected. In discussion, the council clarified that after scope and fees for the project are negotiated with the firm, a contract for a specific amount will be brought to the council. This two-part process is in compliance with the Brooks Act of 1972.

The city council is considering allocating $30,000 in ARPA funds to the Healthy Community Clarkston Outreach Initiative submitted by the Veterans and Community Outreach Foundation, Inc. At the work session on Jan. 25, several council members requested a more detailed plan for how the funds will be spent, in line with the purposes of ARPA. At this month’s regular meeting, further discussion was deferred to the Feb. 22 work session.

In addition, the city is considering a plan to allocate ARPA funds for home repairs or weatherization, in an amount not to exceed $5,000 per household. The council referred further discussion to the Housing and Infrastructure and the Transportation and Environment committees.
