DeKalb County, GA — Various events are happening this week in and around DeKalb County, including a gender-creative story time event at Charis Books and More, First Friday at rek Gallery in Tucker and the artist market at Waller’s Coffee. Several local government meetings are also scheduled for this week.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

The Obama Portraits Tour 

The five-city tour of the Obama portraits will travel the country until May 2022. The exhibit has been traveling since June 2021 and is expected to reach millions of people. The portraits will be at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta until March 20. The exhibit will feature audiovisual elements, Portrait Gallery-led teacher workshops, curatorial presentations, and a richly illustrated book. Due to a high demand for this exhibition, an exhibition-specific ticket is required for all visitors.

KAWS Prints

Artist KAWS made his first screenprints in the late 1990s and has since continued his printmaking practice alongside his production of paintings, sculpture and editioned objects. KAWS brings into conflict and accord the worlds of fine art, industrial design, technology and popular culture. KAWS Prints is the first comprehensive exhibition featuring the artist’s entire output of editioned prints spanning more than 20 years. The exhibition is on view at the High Museum of Art until March 27.

“And I Must Scream”

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University will present a thought-provoking exhibition on Jan. 29. “And I Must Scream” was developed by Dr. Amanda H. Hellman, the museum’s curator of African art. The show will feature photographs, paintings, sculptures, drawings and site-specific installations from 10 local, national and international contemporary artists. The work acts as a call-to-action and shows these crises to be urgent and interconnected. The accompanying programming will bring scholars and artists to teach classes, facilitate performances and create new works of art. The exhibition closes May 15.

Tucker Farmers Market 

The Tucker Farmers Market will be open on Thursday, March 3, from curbside pickup from 4-6 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market features over 35 vendors which include a diverse group of local farmers, bakers, growers and producers from Tucker, metro Atlanta and Georgia. The market is accepting online orders. The online store opens on Thursday afternoons and closes at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Totally 80s Trivia Night

Three Taverns Brewery is hosting totally 80s trivia night on Thursday, March 3, at 7 p.m. This month’s theme is a rad retro edition. This trivia will be all things 80s pop culture. The top three teams will win prizes.

Kelly Yang in Conversation with Kate DiCamillo

Author Kelly Yang will join Kate DiCamillo in conversation to discuss Yang’s new book “New From Here” on Thursday, March 3, at 7 p.m. on Zoom. The book follows 10-year-old Knox Wei-Evan’s mom as makes the last-minute decision to move him and his siblings back to California when the coronavirus hit Hong Kong. As racism skyrockets during COVID-19, Knox tries to stand up to hate, while finding his place in his new country.

Oakhurst Farmers Market 

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturday, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sceptre Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious baked treats, and more among the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

Waller’s Coffee Artist Market 

Waller’s Coffee is hosting an artist market on Saturday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the coffee shop, 240 Dekalb Industrial Way. Vendors can sign up now, and all types of vendors are welcome. The 10×10 vending spots are available on a first come, first served basis. Vendors will need to bring their own canopy and tables and can set up any time after 8 a.m.

Gender-Creative Story Time and Doughnuts

The Oakhurst Elementary Parent Teacher Association, in partnership with Charis Books and More, is hosting a gender-creative story time event about gender-creative, transgender and non-binary children and families. The event will be held on Saturday, March 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Charis Books and More, 184 S. Candler Street in Decatur.

Tai Chi-Qigong Beginners Series

Tai Chi-Qigong for Beginners is a free weekly series of classes that introduce people to the ancient arts of Tai Chi-Qigong for health. Attendees will learn the basics of a practice that can transform one’s health and quality of life. The class will be held in the Cochran building at Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive.

First Friday at rek Gallery in Tucker 

The First Friday at rek Gallery will be held on Friday, March 4, at 6 p.m. at the rek Gallery, 3383 Lawrenceville Highway. The event will highlight the gallery’s new feature artist, Arm of Casso. The artist brings his fluid and dynamic pieces of his exhibit, The Art of Sharpism.

Avondale Estates Commissioner Chat 

Avondale Estates City Commissioner Lisa Shortell and Mayor Jonathan Elmore will host a commissioner chat on Saturday, March 5, from 1:30-3 p.m. on Shortell’s patio at 6 Clarendon Place, weather permitting. Residents will be able to share concerns, ask questions and hear about upcoming projects. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

AARJ Black History Month Student Art Contest

Celebrate the youth art and artists who participated in the Avondale Alliance for Racial Justice’s art contest on Saturday, March 5, from 2-3:30 p.m. at Finders Keepers Furnishings, 2853 E. College Ave. Students were invited to submit their work and reflect on the many sources of strength that have sustained Black Americans throughout history and today. The theme of the contest is “Black Empowerment through Wellness: Strengthening Mind, Body and Spirit.”
