DeKalb County, GA — Various events are happening this week in and around DeKalb County, including an International Women’s Day event hosted by the city of Clarkston, a household hazardous waste recycling event hosted by DeKalb County, and a food distribution event in Clarkston. Several local government meetings are also scheduled for this week.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

The Obama Portraits Tour 

The five-city tour of the Obama portraits will travel the country until May 2022. The exhibit has been traveling since June 2021 and is expected to reach millions of people. The portraits will be at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta until March 20. The exhibit will feature audiovisual elements, Portrait Gallery-led teacher workshops, curatorial presentations, and a richly illustrated book. Due to a high demand for this exhibition, an exhibition-specific ticket is required for all visitors.

KAWS Prints

Artist KAWS made his first screenprints in the late 1990s and has since continued his printmaking practice alongside his production of paintings, sculpture and editioned objects. KAWS brings into conflict and accord the worlds of fine art, industrial design, technology and popular culture. KAWS Prints is the first comprehensive exhibition featuring the artist’s entire output of editioned prints spanning more than 20 years. The exhibition is on view at the High Museum of Art until March 27.

“And I Must Scream”

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University will present a thought-provoking exhibition on Jan. 29. “And I Must Scream” was developed by Dr. Amanda H. Hellman, the museum’s curator of African art. The show will feature photographs, paintings, sculptures, drawings and site-specific installations from 10 local, national and international contemporary artists. The work acts as a call-to-action and shows these crises to be urgent and interconnected. The accompanying programming will bring scholars and artists to teach classes, facilitate performances and create new works of art. The exhibition closes May 15.

Decatur Energy Plan Open Houses

The city of Decatur is in the process of developing a clean energy plan that will focus on reducing traditional energy sources in Decatur. The city, along with the Southface Institute and Greenlink Analytics, is hosting a series of outreach and education events. The city is hosting an opening public session on March 8, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and March 9 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. where the lobby at the Decatur Recreation Center will be open for walk-ins from the community. On March 9, the city will host an open house from 4-7 p.m. where city staff and its team will review the completed plan elements.

International Women’s Day

The city of Clarkston is hosting an International Women’s Day event on Tuesday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m. through Zoom. The virtual event will celebrate inspiring women leaders in business, community involvement and civic service locally and around the world. The panel of speakers will include Clarkston Mayor Beverly Burks, Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett, Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch, Pine Lake Mayor Melanie Hammet and Stone Mountain Mayor Beverly Jones. DeKalb History Center Winter Book Sale

Shop the DeKalb History Center’s large collection of books covering varying topics from the city of Doraville to African American life in DeKalb County to the history of Stone Mountain during the winter book sale March 9-11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The event is free to attend and books will be available for purchase with prices varying from $1- $100. The book sale will be held in the lobby of the Historic DeKalb Courthouse, 101 E. Court Square.

Dan Santat Presents “The Aquanaut”

In partnership with the Georgia Center for the Book, Little Shop of Stories invites the community to their event with author and illustrator Dan Santat on Wednesday, March 9, at 5 p.m. at the Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore Street. Santat will launch and dive into his whimsically adventurous graphic novel, “The Aquanaut.” The event will be held outdoors and attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets. National Walk to School Day

Brockett Elementary School students will meet at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church parking lot from 7-7:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 10. At 7:30 p.m. students will leave the parking lot and walk to school. Tucker Farmers Market 

The Tucker Farmers Market will be open on Thursday, March 10, from curbside pickup from 4-6 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market features over 35 vendors which include a diverse group of local farmers, bakers, growers and producers from Tucker, metro Atlanta and Georgia. The market is accepting online orders. The online store opens on Thursday afternoons and closes at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham Present “Pretty Perfect Kitty-Corn”

In partnership with the Georgia Center for the Book, Little Shop of Stories will host author and illustrator duo Shannon Hale and LeUyen Pham as they launch their new book. The event will be held on Thursday, March 10, at 5 p.m. at the Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore Street. From the creators of “Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn,” comes another positively delightful kitty and unicorn story that celebrates the magic of friendship—and the beauty of imperfection: “Pretty Perfect Kitty-Corn.” The event will be held outdoors and attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets. Fernbank After Dark: Night at the Science Museum

On the second Friday of each month, Fernbank After Dark offers a variety of unique and socially distanced after-hours experiences for grown-ups, including outdoor explorations in WildWoods, museum exhibits, live music, full bars, tapas menus and science demonstrations. Each month highlights a different science theme and features a variety of immersive programming. On Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m. the event will feature an adult science night with after hours access to exhibits, interactive science and live music.

DeKalb County Household Hazardous Waste Recycling 

The DeKalb County Sanitation Division will host its household hazardous waste recycling event on Saturday, March 12, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Sanitation Division’s Central Transfer Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive in Decatur. County residents will be able to properly dispose of dangerous household items that are no longer in use. Hazardous materials, such as aerosols, batteries, adhesives, flammables, lawn care products, fluorescent light bulbs, photo chemicals, paint, paint-related products and artist supplies, will be accepted. Paint will be limited to 10 gallons per vehicle.

Tour deCatur

Tour deCatur, a 5K race hosted by the Decatur Education Foundation, returns in person on Saturday, March 12 at 8:30 a.m. This year will be the 20th anniversary of the race, and it will be dedicated to educators. This year Tour deCatur will include a 5K and one-mile fun run. The fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K will start at 9 a.m. Both races begin at Decatur High School.

Oakhurst Farmers Market 

The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sceptre Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all of your freshest produce, meat, delicious baked treats, and more among the weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations featuring seasonal recipes.

Clarkston Food Distribution

The city of Clarkston is hosting a food distribution event on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tahoe Village Shopping Center, 4604 E. Ponce de Leon Ave. Food will be available while supplies last. The city is partnering with the Veterans and Community Outreach Foundation to put on the event.

Avondale Estates Abelia Hedge Community Work Day (Rescheduled for March 26)

The city of Avondale Estates and the Gardeners for the Common Good will host a community work day on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to remove the ivy, honeysuckle and briars that are choking the abelia hedge. The groups estimate that 50-100 volunteers are needed to tackle removing the ivy. Check in will be on South Avondale Road. Volunteers will need gloves, pruners, a water bottle and a willingness to get down and dirty.

Decatur Bulldog Bash 

Decatur Bulldog Boosters’ annual Bulldog Bash will be held on Saturday, March 12, from 7-11 p.m. at Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive. Proceeds from the event will go to Decatur athletics. This adults-only event features music by The Tiger Kings and The Wowee Zowees, a 50/50 raffle, the Coach of the Year Award, and the Sweet Auburn BBQ food truck.
