Stone Mountain Mayor Beverly Jones speaks during a ceremony and sunflower planting to show solidarity with Ukraine at VFW Park in the city of Stone Mountain on Saturday, April 23, 2022. “This is truly an honor and a pleasure to be here today in unity. The sunflower seed is more than just something that we are planting today. The sunflower seed is very symbolic, it’s a healer and I think it’s so befitting to do it here in the city of Stone Mountain. The sunflower seed is also about resistance, it’s about unity, it’s about hope," Jones said. Photo by Dean Hesse.

Stone Mountain, GA — On Saturday, April 23, the city of Stone Mountain honored the people of Ukraine with a ceremony and planting of sunflowers at all four city parks, starting with VFW Park.

Joan Monroe, Volunteer Coordinator for the Stone Mountain Sunflower project said her husband, City Councilmember Clint Monroe approached the council to have the City of Stone Mountain stand in Solidarity with Ukraine.

“Everybody has already pitched in with funds and whatever they can,” Joan Monroe said. “What we had in mind was to plant the sunflowers, because that’s the national flower of Ukraine, as a symbol that we stand in solidarity. It’s just a way of coming together and standing for the people of Ukraine. Each park will have sunflowers appropriate to that park so each one will look a little different.”

Mayor Beverly Jones, City Councilmembers Gina Cox, Gil Freeman, Teresa Crowe and Clint Monroe were in attendance along with members of the Stone Mountain community.
