Clarkston approves addition of social worker to police department

Clarkston, GA — The Clarkston city council at its Oct. 4 meeting approved the addition of a full-time social worker to the Clarkston Police Department’s staff.

In other business:

— The council approved additional funds to an existing calisthenic equipment, park maintenance and upgrade project for the installation of a poured stone base and rubber surface for $17,275.  A proposed $6,000 for a shade canopy was not approved.

Council member Susan Hood asked to confirm that the equipment and surface will be ADA-compliant.

— The city council approved a sign and façade refurbishment matching grant program for business properties located in Clarkston’s town center. Businesses can apply for a rebate for 50% of improvements up to $20,000. The program, which has been discussed by the city council for some time, will be funded through the American Rescue Plan Act in the amount of $125,000.

— The council also voted to reopen the city’s rental assistance program and allocated $250,000 from ARPA funds for three months.

— The city council held a public hearing for a variance request from Doug Steverson and Rajen Sheth of Boardwalk Development Group for the properties located at 795, 801 and 803 Glendale Road to reduce parking requirements to construct a storage facility. The developers withdrew a request for a landscape buffer reduction. The council voted to deny the request.

— The city authorized a maintenance agreement with Jani-King of Atlanta to clean, sanitize and deodorize all city facilities, including City Hall, the City Hall Annex, and the Public Works building.

— The city issued proclamations for Energy Efficiency Day on October 5, National Hispanic Heritage Month; September 15 – October 15, and Congo Week; October 16-22.
