Stone Mountain, GA — A new wine shop is coming to Stone Mountain and is expected to open this weekend. The Stone Mountain City Council, at its Nov. 1 meeting, approved a special use permit for the wine shop to allow for wine fermentation.

Veveca Cox plans to open Sha’Vie Wine Collections at 941 Main Street. She plans to offer wine and champagne for sale, additional retail and a deli restaurant. Cox will be hosting a wine tasting on Nov. 5 from 3-11 p.m.

She plans to ferment six wines. She has a company in California that will bottle her champagnes and ship them to the shop for wholesale use.

“I would like to do other activities as well to bring to the community such as karaoke, spoken word, sip and paints, things of that nature to bring the community together and have a nice, serene environment to socialize,” Cox said.

Sha’Vie Wine Collections began with a small idea that grew quickly into a big idea during the COVID-19 pandemic, the shop’s website states.

“Sha’Vie Wine Collections was created for the simple love of good wine with exotic flavors. Veveca began researching different wine varietals to create exotic flavors that were sure to stop you in your tracts at first sip and now has eight great flavors of wines to meet every palate with pure euphoria,” the website states.

The wine shop will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.

The Stone Mountain Planning Commission recommended approval of the special use permit at its Oct. 17 meeting, according to the staff report.

The staff report states there wouldn’t be any adverse impacts on the neighborhood or surrounding area. The property was previously vacant and is zoned village commercial mixed-use. The wine shop is also not anticipated to impact traffic in the area.

– In other business, the city council approved a contract with Southern Sky Fireworks for $5,500 for fireworks at the city’s Christmas parade. The show will be about five to seven minutes long and use 1.3 professional fireworks cakes.

– Two Stone Mountain Police officers received certificates of commendation for their work.

Interim Police Chief J.R. Westerfield noted that officers Elizabeth Hilton and Benjamin Small have exceeded his expectations.

“I would like to officially commend you on your hard work and your enthusiasm,” Westerfield said. “Your specific work has not only made our department better, but made everyone inside the department better for it.”

Hilton received commendation for apprehending a suspect on Sept. 27 who was wanted for murder.

“Officer Hilton used her prior knowledge of the case and found reasonable to cause to effect the stop and arresting him without incident. These efforts of Officer Hilton have made our city safe,” Westerfield said.

Small received commendation for his work in intervening in a burglary in progress on Oct. 11.

“Officer Small responded to a location and after a small foot chase apprehended the suspect and recovered stolen goods as well. These efforts of Officer Small has also made our city safe, and we thank you and appreciate you,” Westerfield said.
