DeKalb County, GA — DeKalb County is modifying its garbage collection hours for Thanksgiving and is also holding a food giveaway.
The Tax Commissioner is also modifying office hours due to the holiday.
Here’s the revised trash collection schedule:
Monday, Nov. 21 – Normal collection day.
Tuesday, Nov. 22 – Normal collection day.
Wednesday, Nov. 23 – Normal collection day.
Thursday, Nov. 24 – Thanksgiving Day observed; no collection service.
Friday, Nov. 25 – Residential customers whose regularly scheduled collection day is Thursday, Nov. 24, will be serviced on Friday, Nov. 25.
The Seminole Road Landfill, and Central and North Transfer Stations will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24, reopening on Friday, Nov. 25, during normal operating hours. The Customer Care call center and administration building will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday Nov. 25, reopening on Monday, Nov. 28, during normal operating hours.
The county will hold a Thanksgiving food distribution event on Nov. 19. Here are those details for anyone interested in attending:
On Saturday, Nov. 19, DeKalb County Government will celebrate Thanksgiving Day 2022 by partnering with local faith leaders to distribute 5,000 boxes of 100 percent Georgia-grown fruits and vegetables, eggs, and chicken hindquarters.
Residents will receive one 20-pound box of food that will include a dozen fresh eggs, and a 10-lb. bag of chicken hindquarters. Residents also will receive cookies, fruit juice and cereal especially for children.
“Skyrocketing food prices will be an unwelcome guest at Thanksgiving celebrations this year,” said DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond.
Beginning at 9 a.m., rain or shine, 5,000 boxes of food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, at the following drive-through locations:
— Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, 2340 Clifton Springs Rd. Decatur, GA 30034
— Shy Temple CME Church, 2030 Wesley Chapel Road, Decatur, GA 30035
— Big Miller Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 3800 Big Miller Grove Way, Stonecrest, GA 30038
— Berean Christian Church, 2201 Young Road, Stone Mountain, GA 30088
— The Covenant Church, 1700 Corey Blvd., Decatur, GA 30032
— Saint Phillip AME, 240 Candler Rd. SE, Atlanta, GA 30317
— Rehoboth Baptist Church, 2997 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker GA 30084
The county is utilizing federal American Rescue Plan funds to purchase the food.
Since May 2020, DeKalb County has distributed 99,700 boxes of food.
The Tax Commissioner is modifying its office hours due to the holiday. For anyone planning to use the office next week, here are the details about when the office will be open:
Nov. 23, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., closed Nov. 24-25
Dec. 23, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., closed Dec. 26
Dec. 30, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., closed Jan. 2
“With the holiday season upon us, we are reminding customers that most property tax and motor vehicle services are available online daily,” said Tax Commissioner Irvin J. Johnson. “Taxpayers may go online to access their property information, sign up for e-bills, apply for a homestead exemption, renew their vehicle registration, check their vehicle title and insurance status, and more. There are also several self-service tag renewal kiosks conveniently located at participating Kroger stores in DeKalb.”
